I bought a guide book to Marrakesh ages ago and finally got to visit last year. The old medina is like a maze, but our wonderful hosts Eric and Didier at Riad Houdou walked us to the Djemaa el-Fna to help us get our bearings. This is the main square, surrounded by souqs and full of colourful stalls and snake charmers. The city is a mix of bustling streets and tranquil courtyards and two of the highlights were the incredible, delicate carving of the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa and the vibrant colours of Jardin Majorelle – the Yves Saint Laurent gardens. We also headed out of the city to experience the wonderfully warm Berber hospitality in one of the small villages high in the Atlas Mountains.
